Sullivans Island

A barrier island north of Charleston Harbor, Sullivans Island offers a very relaxed, laid back atmosphere for its locals.  Many of the island's homes were built as summer places for Charlestonians but, today, the island is home to mostly permanent residents as new vacation rentals, who are not already grandfathered in, are not allowed.

One can enjoy great restaurants such as Poe's or the Obstinate Daughter.  And, every New Year's Day, hundreds of people flock to the island for the annual Polar Plunge, which benefits a charity such as Special Olympics.

For history lovers, Sullivans island is home to Fort Moultrie which is a unit of the Fort Sumter National Monument.  To resist invasion from the enemies and to protect our nation, Fort Moultire stood as a ready sentinel at the entrance to Charleston Harbor for more than 170 years
