Summerville has its own historic stories to tell. First settled in the late 1700's by Charlestonian residents who sought respite in this area from the summer heat. From May to September, plantation families along the nearby Ashley River and other coastal areas, headed for higher elevation to live temporarily or "maroon," in the tiny colony, soon named Summerville.
Today, visitors from all over flock to Summerville in the spring as this historic town is awash in color, from the hot pink azaleas, to the purple wisteria, to the delicate white dogwood. One weekend in March, thousands of festival-goers transcend this gracious Southern town to take in the flowers and hospitality and attend one of the largest arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast - The YMCA Flowertown Festival.
Summerville is also home to the award winning Dorchester #2 School District. Families relocating to South Carolina usually have Summerville on as a priority when searching for homes because of the school system's excellent reputation.
When entering downtown Summerville, you feel like you have taken a step back in time with the brownstone style store fronts. If you have never visited before, once you do, you will quickly realize why Summerville is the birthplace of Sweet Tea - relaxing on the antebellum style front porches you see as you drive through the historic district, back in the day when air conditioning was not even a figment of anyone's imagination.
